The cabinet today appointed Moshe Asher as deputy director of the Israel Tax Authority until March 2013, when he will become the director general. Acting Tax Authority director general Doron Arbeli will serve as director general until March 2013. Three ministers opposed the appointment.
The vote came after Minister of Finance Yuval Steinitz and Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein reached a compromise over Asher's appointment last week.
Ministry of Finance sources said that Steinitz came up with the compromise, after getting broad hints that Weinstein would put Asher's appointment to a cabinet vote over Steinitz's objections. Steinitz intended to personally submit the appointment in order torpedo it.
Steinitz's planned maneuver infuriated Weinstein, who considered it contempt of court, after the Supreme Court ordered the cabinet to vote on Asher's appointment.
