Alvarion Ltd. (Nasdaq: ALVR; TASE: ALVR) today announced that a Tier-1 Chinese mobile carrier has deployed Wi-Fi base stations for Wi-Fi internet access in the Liaoning Province in northeast China. Alvarion added that this is one of several Wi-Fi by Tier-1 carriers in rural China using solutions developed by Alvarion subsidiary Wavion Ltd.. Alvarion did not disclose the financial details of the deal.
Alvarion and Wavion's Chinese distributor Beijing Huasun Unicreate Co. Ltd. (BHU) are handling the project. The company expects more projects as China's broadband usage grows and Wi-Fi deployments expand.
The 2,500 base stations cover Liaoning's capital Shenyang, as well as the cities of Tieling, Fushun, Chaoyang, and Fuxin. The network is still being expanded to cover rural areas in rugged terrain where cables cannot be laid. Liaoning's population is 41 million, including 24 million in rural areas with no telephony or internet connection to surrounding regions.
Alvarion COO Tal Meirzon said, “We are pleased to work hand in hand with our long-time partner and distributor BHU to provide carrier-grade Wi-Fi connectivity throughout dozens of provinces, to the 3 major carriers in China with a total of more than 10,000 base stations. Covering vast areas of rural landscape and being able to connect such a large population with Alvarion’s Wi-Fi technology, only serves to solidify our commitment to bridging the digital divide and giving access to Wi-Fi services that improves people and communities day to day lifestyles."
BHU CEO Xu Dongdong added, "Alvarion’s carrier-grade Wi-Fi base stations were selected for this project because of their enhanced Wi-Fi technology that delivers high performance and unlimited coverage and capacity."
Alvarion's share price rose 10.4% by midday on the TASE today to NIS 3.13, after rising 3.8% on Nasdaq yesterday to $0.79, giving a market cap of $49 million.
