Kadima quits government

Kadima head Shaul Mofaz said that he had done everything possible to promote a Knesset bill requiring a universal draft.

Following the failure of talks between Kadima and the Likud over recruitment of Haredim to the IDF and a universal draft, Kadima has quit the government and is returning to the opposition. Deputy Prime Minister and Kadima leader Shaul Mofaz convened a special Kadima faction meeting today and insisted that his party had done everything possible to promote a Knesset bill that would have introduced equal national duty for all.

Mofaz told the Kadima faction, "I did everything and left no stone unturned. The Prime Minister chose to give up on our sons and daughters."

Even though Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced yesterday that there had been progress on talks between the sides, he has not met with Mofaz since last Thursday.

Mofaz was elected leader of the Kadima party in March and joined the government coalition in May.
