Graphics processing unit (GPU) virtualization software company Lucid Technologies has announced that Japanese computer giant Fujitsu Ltd. has integrated its virtualization technology into some of its PCs. Virtu software contributes towards more environment friendly PC and workstation systems by completely powering down the discrete GPU to zero watts when not in use, by switching processing workloads to the integrated GPU, helping save energy and reducing total cost of system ownership.
Lucid estimates that the sales potential for the Fujitsu computer units containing Lucid's software is one million meaning that the deal could be worth several million to the Israeli company.
Lucid was founded in 2003 by CTO Dr. Reuven Bakalash, Effi Fogel and president and VP business development Offir Remez and is led by CEO Moshe Steiner. The company started out in the Maayan Ventures Ltd. (TASE:MAYN) incubator developing technologies to speed up computer graphics performance for complex multimedia content and engineering applications using architecture that enables smart management and saving of parts on the computer motherboard.
Lucid began as a chip provider but changed its model two years ago and today provides software as part of the operating system. Lucid has already reported deals this year with two other computer giants Asus and Intel, and says that "talks are being conducted with other leading global hardware companies."
The company has raised $40 million to date from Rho Ventures, Giza Venture Capital, Genesis Partners and Intel Capital. But company value according to Maayan Ventures is $10-15 million. According to Remez the company issues over 10 million licenses annually which would translate to revenue of over $10 million.
