Amnon Lipkin-Shahak dies

The 68 year-old former IDF chief of staff had been battling cancer for several years.

Former IDF chief of staff Amnon Lipkin-Shahak has died, “IDF Radio" (Galei Zahal) reports. Lipkin-Shahak, 68, died in Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem. In recent years he has been battling against cancer.

Lipkin-Shahak succeeded Ehud Barak as the 15th Chief of the General Staff in 1995 and retired from the IDF in 1998 after 36 years military service. In 1999 he was elected to the Knesset on Yitzhak Mordechai's Center Party list and he served as Minister of Tourism and Minister of Transport before resigning from the Knesset in 2001 and becoming a businessman. He was also associated in recent years with peace initiatives such as the Geneva Initiative and J Street.

He is survived by his wife, the journalist Tali Lipkin-Shahak and five children.
