Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird is in Israel to discuss the merger of Israel Chemicals Ltd. (TASE: ICL) with Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (NYSE; TSX: POT). Yesterday, he met Israel Corporation (TASE: ILCO) chairman Amir Elstein at a restaurant in Tel Aviv to discuss the deal.
Potash Corporation wants to acquire Israel Chemicals from Israel Corp., but the government's position on a deal is uncertain. The government's golden share in Israel Chemicals means that it must approve any sale of the company. Potash Corporation has said that it will soon submit a formal offer for Israel Chemicals.
