Histadrut to declare labor dispute at ports

The move is in response to the government's plans to build two new private ports in Ashdod and Haifa alongside the existing ports in the two cities.

The Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) coordination and implementation committee will meet tomorrow to declare a labor dispute at the seaports. The declaration of a labor dispute allows for a strike, after a two-week cooling-off period.

The move is in response to the government's plans to build two new private ports in Ashdod and Haifa alongside the existing ports in the two cities.

Last week, Histadrut chairman Ofer Eini postponed a press conference he had scheduled over the issue, and agreed to enter into direct talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. These talks are reportedly deadlocked, and the two men failed to reach understandings, prompting the Histadrut's decision to declare a labor dispute.
