376 apartments will be demolished in the urban renewal project with 1,000 units to be built in five 36-floor towers.

The Jerusalem District Planning and Building Commission in the Administration of Planning today deposited an urban renewal plan in the Katamonim neighborhood. The plan contains 1,000 new housing units to be constructed in five 36-floor residential towers. 200 of the housing units will be allocated for small apartments. The developer for the plan is Kidmat Hayovel and the architect is Michal Della Pergola.

Five residential buildings with 376 old housing units will be demolished to make room for the new buildings. In addition to the five residential towers, the plan includes commercial and business space, expansion of space for public buildings, and 22 dunam (5.5 acres) of open space.

The entire plan, which covers 52 dunam (13 acres), is located along Shimon Bar Yochai Street near Elmaliach Park in Katamonim. The District Planning and Building Commission said today that the plan conformed to the principles of the master plan for urban renewal on the neighborhood.

The District Planning and Building Commission added, "The plan stresses upgrading the public space, development of the park, and integration of places on interest in the continuity of the Mesila Park, expansion of sidewalks, creation of spaces for activity between the buildings and opening wide passages between the buildings that will preserve the connection between the neighborhood and the park."

Jerusalem District planner Shira Talmi Babay said today, "The plan constitutes an important link in the urban renewal process in the neighborhood and in Jerusalem as a whole. Beyond upgrading of construction and the increase in the supply of housing, the plan also improves and renews the public space and upgrades the level of municipal services in the older parts of the city."
