Terminal 1, which serves low-cost airlines flying into Israel, has undergone a major renovation including the addition of duty free stores.

Ben Gurion Airport Terminal 1 reopened this morning after more than four months of renovations and reconstruction. Terminal 1, which was once the main terminal at the airport until Terminal 3 was opened in 2003, serves low-cost airlines.

The comprehensive renovation, which began in January, includes advanced check-in, baggage-drop, security checking and passport control facilities. Next month a range of duty free stores, cafes and restaurants will also open.

Airlines using Terminal 1 include easyJet, which offers flights to the UK, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, and Germany; Wizzair, which flies to Hungary, Romania, Poland, Latvia, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and the UK; Ryanair (Cyprus, Italy, Germany and Poland), Norwegian Air (Denmark and Sweden); and Israeli airlines Arkia Airlines Ltd. and Israir Airlines and Tourism Ltd.

Minister of Transport Yisrael Katz said, "The welcome increase in low-cost flights that the Open Skies revolution has brought has cut fares on overseas flights by tens of percentage points and increased the number of flight destinations from Israel."

"From the summer," he added, "Passengers will enjoy a full independent terminal for low-cost flights. The Open Skies agreement signed with the EU has seen the largest consumer revolution in the past five years and I'm determined to move quickly on additional agreements with carriers that fly to Israel."
