Ernst & Young Israel chairman Ronen Barel has been informed that its 1,800 employees have joined the Histadrut.

Ernst & Young Israel - Kost Forer Gabbay & Kasierer, Israel's largest accounting firm, has established a workers committee, and become the first Israeli accounting firm to unionize. The Histadrut General Federation of Labor officially announced this morning in a letter sent to E&Y Israel chairman Ronen Barel that the firm's 1,800 employees had joined it., after one third of them , as required by law, had signed the relevant forms.

The process of forming the union has taken many months and only yesterday did the unionizing operation become overt. Stalls were set up at the company's Tel Aviv offices staffed by dozens of employees and Histadrut activists. Pamphlets were distributed and and a Facebook group formed.

"Globes" was the first to reveal last May that the unionization process was taking place at E&Y Israel, after employees complained of long hours and low salaries. Similar moves have been taking place at Israel's other top accounting firms KPMG Somekh Haikin, BDO Ziv Haft, PwC Kesselman and Kesselman, and Deloitte Brightman Almagor Zohar.
