The pilot program will offer 20-30 more spots for bicycles at three stations in Tel Aviv and Herzliya.

Israel Railways is launching a new effort to convince passengers to bring their bikes - and not their cars - to the station. The company acquired double-decker bicycle parking, a popular solution in the Netherlands, in the hope of convincing more bikers to take the train without worrying about where to leave their bicycles.

The pilot program will install the new bicycle parking facilities at three stations: Tel Aviv Hashalom, Tel Aviv Savidor, and Herzliya. Each station will host 20-30 parking spots.

Israel Railways officials said they will conduct satisfaction surveys and examine the longevity of the stations at the end of the pilot program; if the results are positive, Israel Railways will explore how to expand the devices to its other stations across the country.

The expansion of bicycle parking spots is part of the company’s efforts to increase access to its stations. Much criticism is levied against Israel Railways over the claims its stations are too far from commercial and residential areas.

As part of this campaign, Israel Railways conducted a study to calculate the savings offered by taking the train instead of a private car to work. The study, initially published by “Globes” last month, determined the savings reached the tens of thousands of shekels per year. In one example, riding the train from Ashdod to Tel Aviv and back could save passengers more than NIS 38,000 annually.
