Ministry of Economy director general: We expect the benefits of the tax-exempt products to be passed on to the consumers.

Yenot Bitan has launched a new private label for its imported meat products, after the Ministry of Economy announced it denied a request by Tnuva to import meat for retail chains by using the chains’ own quotas. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Economy said Wednesday it would increase the annual quota for tax exempt fresh meat by 1,500 tons - up to 6,120 tons.

The quota will be distributed to the Neto Group, which imports Angus-brand meat for Shufersal; Mahsanei Hashuk; Yohananof; Rami Levy; Of Yerushalayim, which has started operating the meat sections at Rami Levy stores; and Ezra Lati from Maadaney Hatale.

The Ministry of Economy said the quotas were provided to companies which proved their import capabilities in recent months, as part of an effort to promote competition in the Israeli market.

Next week, the government will distribute quotas for the tax-exempt import of frozen produce, olive oil, and grape juice. The ministry’s director general Amit Lang said: “The Ministry of Economy and Industry expects the benefits of the tax-exempt food imported to be passed on to consumers. The quota committee will monitor the prices of the suppliers who received the allotment, and will decide on future quota allocations based on the prices the suppliers charge the retail stores and consumers.”

Quota committee chair Yair Shiran said: “We chose the winners based on a wide-range of measures, including the capability to immediately utilize the import quotas, the distribution capacity, the ability to reach a wide variety of customers across the country, and the contribution to promoting competition in the sector.”
