The three companies are expected to announce details of the collaboration on Friday.

Israeli driver assistance systems and collision avoidance developer Mobileye (NYSE: MBLY) has teamed with Intel and German automaker BMW, on developing the autonomous car, a source familiar with the subject has said. The three companies have scheduled a press conference for tomorrow when they are expected to announce the initiative.

Although Intel is the world's largest chipmaker, it needs to make up ground in the vehicle manufacturing industry. BMW has already bought products from Mobileye including its camera based sensor systems.

Mobileye was founded by chairman and CTO Prof. Amnon Shashua, president and CEO Ziv Aviram, and Yitzhak Litman.
