Only the east-west section of the Road 1 bridge opened today. The west-east bridge and Harel tunnels will open in November.

The east-west section of the Motza bridge on Road 1 - the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway - opened this morning. The bridge cuts out the notorious Motza curve in the valley beneath Mevasseret Zion. The sharp curve has seen dozens of lethal accidents over the years, although in recent times with congested traffic reduced to a crawl for much of the day, the number of accidents has fallen.

The two 30 meter high, 800 meter long bridges cost NIS 380 million and are an integral part of the upgrading of Road 1 between Shaar Hagai and Jerusalem. The west-east bridge will open in November along with the Harel tunnels to the west, which will replace the current Harel Interchange and cut out much of the steep hill on Road 1, leading up to the Castel.
