The prime minister called on coalition members to act together for the good of the country.

Against a backdrop of unrest in the coalition in the past twenty-four hours, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to calm things down this morning, declaring that he had no intention of calling an early general election. "The last thing we need now is elections," Netanyahu said at the start of the government's weekly meeting, which took place this morning because of the recent Jewish holidays.

"The State of Israel needs a stable, strong and responsible government and I call on all members of the coalition to act together, to continue acting together, for the good of Israel and its people," the prime minister added.

Commenting on the Knesset's winter session that opens next week, Netanyahu said, "We have very important tasks before us, and we shall deal with some of them at today's government meeting: the war on illegal capital, cutting back bureaucracy and over-regulation, and of course promoting the development of natural gas as well as power generation by alternative means."
