Obstacles impede Israel's urban building boom

Next week's “Globes” Israel Real Estate and Infrastructures Conference will discuss barriers blocking city center construction.

Massive construction in city centers was supposed to pay off financially for all sides: the old and new residents; the developers; the municipalities; and the government, which is trying to increase the housing supply. So why is there so little construction in the cities?

The participants in the Thinking Inside the Box session at the “Globes” Real Estate Summit-Israel Real Estate and Infrastructures Conference in collaboration with Mizrahi Tefahot Bank (TASE:MZTF), will discuss the barriers blocking the building boom in city centers. The session will also mark the tenth anniversary of the National Outline Plan 38, which grants building rights for old buildings retrofitted against earthquakes, summarizes the program, its status, and offers conclusions and trends. The results of the of the “Globes” real estate survey will also be revealed.

CEO Noam Benyamini, Mizrahi Tefahot Bank Real Estate Sector director Pnina Ella; Ra’anana Deputy Mayor and planning and construction subcommittee chairman Adv. Eitan Ginzburg;Aloni-Haft Group owner and CEO Shahar Aloni; architect Sofia Aldor, an adviser, former director of the Municipal Planning Branch at the Ministry of Construction and Housing, and chairwoman of the first urban renewal committee; Tel Aviv-Jaffa deputy city engineer Orly Arel, New City Ltd. chairman Dror Halevi, and Shapir Civil and Marine Engineering Ltd. VP initiatives and real estate planning Gad Gershon. “Globes” real estate editor Dror Marmor will be the session moderator.

The Real Estate Summit is Israel’s largest real estate conference, a key meeting place for decision-makers, businesspeople, government officials, and economic leaders. Ahead of the elections, the conference will present housing solutions offered by the parties running for the Knesset and will present the economic efforts for housing and infrastructures in Israel.

The conference will be held on Monday, February 23, 2015, with the participation of real estate industry executives, developers, contractors, engineers, architects, assessors, brokers, lawyers, accountants, investors, and others.
