Minister of National Infrastructure, Energy, and Water Resources Yuval Steinitz met this morning with Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Italian energy giant Eni, one of the world's largest oil and gas companies. The Italian government is promoting cooperation between Eni, Israel, Egypt, and Cyprus in the gas sector.
Steinitz proposed to Descalzi that Eni, which discovered the huge Zohr gas field in Egypt, consider investing in the Karish and Tanin gas reservoirs, and also consider additional oil and gas exploration in Israeli waters.
Ministry of National Infrastructure, Energy, and Water Resources director general Shaul Meridor made a presentation to representatives of the Italian company on the potential for discovering more large gas reservoirs in Israeli waters and the advantage of regional cooperation.
The regional gas sector and the possibility of linking the gas discoveries in Israel, Egypt, and Cyprus for the purpose of joint exports to the Western European market were discussed at the meeting.
After the meeting with Descalzi, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "As part of closer cooperation between Israel and Italy in a wide variety of areas, I see great importance in cooperation with Italy in the energy sector, too."
