Sonol layoffs fuel Histadrut anger

The Histadrut claims 20 gas station managers were only fired because they were unionizing.

Sonol Israel Ltd. today unveiled efficiency measures, which include laying off 20 gas station managers. However, the Histadrut General Federation of Labor claims that the layoffs have come about because the employees were seeking to unionize and had requested setting up a workers committee.

In response Sonol, which is controlled by David Azrieli through Azrieli Group subsidiary Granite Hacarmel Investments Ltd. (TASE: GRNT), insisted that the firings were part of a reorganization by which gas stations would be divided into local clusters, with managers taking responsibility for three stations in close proximity.

Histadrut professional association legal advisor Shay Teken wrote to Sonol's management today demanding that the letters of dismissal sent to the 20 gas station manager employed by Sonol subsidiary Spring Motors be withdrawn.
