Israelis have many friends - 2 million on Facebook

The social networking site is the fourth most popular website in Israel.

Even as Israel's Twitter community stays fairly small, social networking site Facebook is continuing to expand in Israel, and worldwide. CheckFaceBook, a country-by-country provider of Facebook statistics, reports there are two million Facebook subscribers in Israel, fewer than 1% of the 316 million subscribers worldwide.

CheckFaceBook says that 53.8% of Israeli Facebook subscribers are men, and 46.2% are women. The breakdown by age group is as follows: people aged 18-24 constitute 32.4% of subscribers, people aged 25-34 constitute 37.6%, and teenagers aged 14-17 constitute 18.3%.

The figures are in line with figures by TIM rating agency. The TIM survey of websites in Israel for September found Facebook in fourth place, with a weekly exposure rate of 57.2%, amounting to 2.1 million hits per week.

From a global perspective, Facebook's popularity continues to grow and it adds new subscribers every month. Last week, it announced that it exceeded 325 million subscribers, an 8% growth in six weeks. Facebook is adding 500,000 new subscribers a week at the present growth rate.

Internet marketing research company comScore Inc. (Nasdaq: SCOR) reports that Facebook is the fourth largest website in the world, surpassing Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN), eBay Inc. (Nasdaq: EBAY), Wikipedia, and AOL.

Facebook's largest markets are in the US, with 94.7 million users, the UK, with 22.2 million users, Turkey, with 14.2 million, and France with 13.3 million. The fastest growing market is Poland, followed by Thailand and Portugal.
