The rehabilitation of the former Hiryia landfill as an urban park is getting underway after the Tel Aviv Regional Planning and Building Commission approved a building permit for the first stage of the project. The park will be named for former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
The park will cover 8,000 dunam (2,000 acres) when completed, triple the size of the Yarkon Park in north Tel Aviv. A recycling industrial park will be established at the foot of landfill. The project includes rehabilitation of Nahal Ayalon and Nahal Shapirim and rebuilding the drainage and pooling systems to prevent flooding in south Tel Aviv and Holon neighborhoods.
A team of international planners is designing the new park, headed by German landscape architect Peter Latz. The Israeli team includes Moria Sekely Landscape Architects and the Braudo Maoz Landscape Architecture Ltd.
The first stage of the project involves rehabilitating over 200 dunam (50 acres) of the Hiriya landfill, including building paths to climb the mountain to a lookout at the top with a view of the Tel Aviv skyline, and planting trees along the pedestrian paths.
