On Saturday night, Israel Railways will return to service the carriages with engines that were taken out of service earlier this month after one of them caught fire because of an engine malfunction.
Israel Railways pulled 46 motorized carriages from service as a result of the incident, disrupting service and overcrowding the remaining carriages. 30 of the carriages will initially be returned to service, with the remainder gradually returned as tests are completed.
The fire is still under investigation, but was apparently caused by a repair made in 2001 in Denmark, where the carriages were manufactured. The interim report found that the fault was specific to that car, not a system-wide problem, which is why Israel Railways decided to return the carriages to service. The final report will be published in a few weeks.
