Netanyahu mulls snap elections

Senior government sources believe Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may call for elections to be held within 90 days.

After the failure of the explosive political maneuvering this morning and the attempt to split the Kadima party, there are once again rumors circulating about early elections. Senior sources in the coalition government believe that the possibility of snap elections cannot be ruled out and that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is examining calling elections for within 90 days. A decision will be made on the matter in the coming few days.

This week the Knesset is due to begin its summer recess. If Netanyahu decides to dissolve the Knesset he can do so before Wednesday, or reach an agreement with the other Knesset factions about an election date, and then reconvene the Knesset in a week or so in order to dissolve it.

Over the weekend, "Globes" reported that Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin believes that elections will be held in either November 2012 or March 2013.
