The Jerusalem District Planning and Building Commission has approved for deposit for objections from the public a plan for the construction of 400 housing units in the Kiryat Hayovel neighborhood in the capital. The plan is part of the government program for long-term rental construction by a government company.
The plan approved for Jerusalem involves a 20-dunam (five-acre) site named Little Hadassah located between Chile, Tejon, and Henrietta Szold Sts., near Gan HaMifletzet. The plan proposes building 400 housing units on the site in four 18-storey towers above two commercial and office floors with 7,000 sq.m. The land, which is state-owned and managed by Israel Land Authority (ILA), has been leased for years by the Hadassah women's organization. A building on the site is used as a community health center.
The Jerusalem municipality promoted the plan, together with ILA and the Ministry of Finance. The municipality today said that it had not yet been determined whether all the housing units that could be built in the framework of the proposed plan would be put up for rent, but that the aim was for at least 75% of the apartments to be assigned to long-term rentals. The municipality added that people from the government rental housing company, Apartment for Rent, were conducting feasibility checks and determining the number of apartments that would be for rent.
The Ministry of the Interior said, "Representatives of the Apartment for Rent government company who attended the public discussion presented to the committee members the state's plan to carry out the program by building apartments for long-term rental in some of the buildings, while allocating a fixed section for affordable rental housing."
