The 1.7 kilometer tunnel is part of a new 22-kilometer section slated for opening in late 2018.
Minister of Transport Yisrael Katz today cut another symbolic ribbon, this time for the Yokneam tunnel, as part of the project for extending Road 6 - the Cross Israel Highway - northward. The 1.7-kilometer tunnel begins at Yokneam Junction and ends at the Tel Kashish Interchange between Hatishbi Junction and HaAmakim Junction.
Shapir Engineering and Industry Ltd. (TASE:SPEN) is managing the NIS 2.5 billion Road 6 extension project. The new 22-kilometer section is slated for opening in late 2018. The section includes 10 kilometers of tunnels, five interchanges, and nine bridges with a total length of 4.5 kilometers.
Speaking at today's event, Katz that extending the road "will relieve the traffic jams in the area, and is slated to significantly shorten the travel time between central Israel and the Galilee. When the project is completed, it will be possible for the first time to travel from Ahihud Junction to Beersheva without encountering any traffic lights."
