Israel's two top supermarket chains Shufersal Ltd. (TASE:SAE;Pink Sheets:SSLTF) and Blue Square Israel Ltd. (NYSE: BSI; TASE: BSI) have kept their market share, while independent chain Rami Levy Chain Stores Hashikma Marketing 2006 Ltd. (TASE:RMLI) is winning market share at the expense of grocery stores and mini-markets, according to Nielsen Rating figures obtained by "Globes".
Fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) proceeds totaled NIS 2.49 billion in June 2009, 3.5% less than the NIS 2.58 billion in June 2008. However, FMCG proceeds rose by 0.8% in the first half of 2009, compared with the first half of last year, to NIS 15.87 billion.
Shufer-Sal kept its standing as Israel's leading supermarket chain, with a market share of 36.7% in June, the same as in May, and higher than its market share of 35.7% in June 2008.
Blue-Squre kept its standing as Israel's second largest supermarket chain, with a market share of 19.9% in June, the same as in May, but less than its market share of 21.8% in June 2008. The 12-month decline was less than in preceding months.
Independent chains Kol Bo Hazi Hinam Ltd. Rami Levy, Israel's third and fourth largest supermarket chains, increased their market shares at the expense of grocery stores, mini-markets, and pharmacy chains. The aggregate share of independent supermarket chains rose to 19.3% in June from 19% in May, but is still less than their peak of 20.2% in June 2008.
