Consumer confidence drops

Poor economic reports from overseas affected consumers' outlook in December.

The Israel Consumer Confidence Index fell in December, after falling in November as well. The index rose in October. The index fell by 1.1 points in December to 92.9 points (baseline 100 = 1996), after falling 4.3 points in November, and rising 4.7 points in October.

Three month moving trend figures showed a small 0.2 point drop in the Consumer Confidence Index to 95.1.

The drop in consumer confidence stems primarily from the public's worsening expectations of the state of the economy in six-months' time. That could be the result of negative economic reports from overseas.

In contrast, there is stability in expectations with regard to the socio-economic situation in 6 months, as well as in perceptions of the current state of the economy.

Despite the drop in consumer confidence over two months, personal consumption still seems set to rise in the first half of 2010, based on trend figures in intentions to purchase durable goods. December figures showed a rise in those intentions for the third month in a row.

The Consumer Confidence Index is compiled by Globes Research and Kesselman and Kesselman - PricewaterhouseCoopers Israel.
