Job vacancies up 8% in third quarter

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Labor sees a continued rise in employment.

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor's economics and research administration today published data about demand for employees in the third quarter of 2010.

The figures showed a rise in demand for employees and a moderate fall in the positive balance of employment (jobs filled minus jobs becoming vacant) recorded in the third quarter of 2010. An analysis of the demand for employees indicates that there was a rise of 8% in job vacancies from a daily average of 51,000 in the second quarter of 2010 to 54,900 in the third quarter.

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor also found that there was a fall in the balance of employment. This figure stood at 15,300 jobs compared with 23,200 in the preceding quarter.

The fall in the positive employment balance in the third quarter stemmed from a significant growth in jobs becoming vacant, where there was a rise of 17% compared with the preceding quarter, which was influenced by a rise of 32% in layoffs (84,500 compared with 64,000 in the preceding quarter).

Nonetheless, the positive work balance signifies a continued rise in employment. The expectations of employers in relation to changes in activities and the work force in the near future remain positive and similar to levels in the preceding quarter, and indicate a continued improvement in the near future in economic activities and recruitment of employees by businesses.
