Manufacturers: Clock change saves NIS 100m

Manufacturers Association's Nava Sela: Israel has one of the shortest periods of Daylight Savings Time in the world.

Israeli households will save NIS 16 million in electricity bills during the 170 days of summer (daylight savings) time this year, the Manufacturers Association of Israel said today. Daylight Savings Time will come into effect at 2 am on Friday, March 26, when the clocks will be moved forward one hour.

Manufacturers Association energy committee chairwoman Nava Sela said that Israel has one of the shortest periods of Daylight Savings Time in the world. The US has 239 days of summer time, and Europe has 218 days.

A study by the Manufacturers Association claims that the Israeli economy will save NIS 100 million from Daylight Savings Time this year, including NIS 51 million in savings on electricity bills.

Sela says that most of the electricity savings come from an average 0.6% reduction in daily electricity use for lighting and air conditioning. Additional savings come from increased employee output and productivity, improved employee welfare and quality of life, longer sales hours at stores and malls, and fewer road accidents.

Daylight Savings Time begins each year on the last Friday before April 2, and runs through 2 am on the Sunday between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
