The Central Regional Planning and Building Commission has approved the master plan for vacating the Zerifin IDF base. The plan includes areas for residential and commercial construction. It will include the construction of 17,000 housing units and 1.6 million square meters of business space.
The plan is part of the government decision to move IDF bases from central Israel to the Negev. The master plan for Zerifin will be the basis for detailed plans for the 4,000-dunam (1,000-acre) area. After the base is vacated, it will be divided between the jurisdictions of the Rishon LeZion and Beer Yaakov municipalities.
The deadline for vacating Zerifin has not yet been set, nor has the sale of the land by the government been decided. So far, only a deadline for vacating a tenth of the base has been set, which will allow the sale of land for the construction of 3,500 housing units. The IDF plans to clear this area by the end of the year.
