The Codota pair-programmer, now available for Java, suggests the most appropriate code to developers in real-time.

Israeli startup Codota has raised $2 million in seed investment from Khosla Ventures. Other investors include Bob Pasker, founder of WebLogic and the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology. The Tel Aviv based company strives to change the lives of developers with the launch of its AI-driven pair-programmer.

The Codota pair-programmer, now available for Java, suggests the most appropriate code to developers in real-time - based on models learned from all code available on the web. It seamlessly integrates directly into the developer’s IDE, saving precious time, and reducing the risk of human error.

The company was founded by CEO Dror Weiss and CTO Prof. Eran Yahav.

Weiss said, “Developers spend over 20% of their working time searching for code. Codota not only saves this time, but also makes it unnecessary for developers to reinvent the wheel every single time. With Codota, you stop searching, and let the right code find you, on time, instead. We’ve started with the Java community, and will be adding more languages soon.”

Codota analyzes all public code available on the web, including platforms such as GitHub and StackOverflow, as well as other sources. It then applies learning algorithms that work on a semantic representation of a program rather than just its source code. This new layer of understanding allows Codota to identify similarities and patterns across programs that are written differently, but actually perform the same tasks.

Prof. Yahav said, “Codota not only learns from all publicly available code, it also learns how this code has been constructed and changed over time; this capability allows it to predict new code, as well as highlight deviations from common structures. We’re building Codota to become the ideal artificial pair programmer.” Codota commercializes results of a research led by Prof. Yahav at the Technion, Israel’s leading technical institute, for over six years.

Vinod Khosla, founder of Sun Microsystems and Khosla Ventures added, “The AI revolution will impact all avenues of modern life, and software development is no exception. With the advent of large-scale code repositories and community question-answering sites, there’s much code to learn from. A decade from now, I believe that software development will be radically different from today, thanks to AI, which will make it possible to build ever more ambitious applications, faster. Codota is at the absolute forefront of this exciting transition, and they’re just getting started.”

Weiss said, “While developers are writing increasingly sophisticated programs, the actual process of writing code has not changed. Codota removes the need for developers to leave their IDE and search for code using textual search engines. It delivers the most appropriate learned code, straight to the developer’s fingertips."
