Carmel Tunnels install G4S fire warning system

The two Carmel Tunnels run beneath Mount Carmel in Haifa.

G4S Technology Ltd. of the UK is in the advanced stages of installing a NIS 3 million fire detection system in the Carmel Tunnels. The system can spot a fire shortly after ignition.

The Carmel Tunnels project is due to be completed within a few months. It includes two tunnels that run beneath Mount Carmel from the Coastal Highway (Road 2) at southern entrance to Haifa to the Check Post at the northern entrance, and include a midpoint interchange at Ruppin Road.

G4S has already installed the system in the train tunnel on the Modi'in-Ben Gurion Airport line, and in the Maccabit road tunnel.

G4S's system includes a linear heat sensor system based on stainless steel wrapped fiber optics made by British firm Sensa Ltd., which can detect the tunnel's temperature profile in real time throughout its length to locate the exact location of a fire, and the direction and speed with which it is spreading. This enables all connected systems to activate the tunnel evacuation systems.
